Grubs in an NY Lawn

Dear C.J.

I live in upstate NY and in the past few weeks, our lawn has been dying in various areas. These patches are start small and seem to be spreading out up to 15 feet in diameter. The grass is uprooted in small clumps and now we have huge areas where the dead grass is simply lying on the dirt. i could take a rake and remove it easily and be left with absolutely no vegetation in these areas. It almost appears that the grass has been pulled out and even scattered around. I thought maybe it was an animal, but now I think we have a fungus or parasite of some kind. My husband did aerate and spread fertilizer (as he has done before), so maybe its even that. However recently the grass was all displaced in clumps by my walkway, where there was no treatment - I just don't know. Did we displace some bugs? Attract birds?

Do you have any thoughts on this - I am so very perplexed and am finding no answers online so far. I would be extremely grateful for some help. -Missy
