Controlling Weeds in Zoysia Grass

Hi C.J.

I'm experiencing an over abundance of all kinds of weeds in my lawn (Zoysia). What should I do?

Lil

Hi Lil,

I’m actually a bit surprised to hear that. Zoysia tends to get so thick that very few weeds can creep in. That said, your problem certainly isn’t unheard of.

To get rid of the weeds, you’re going to have to spray them with a weed killer. It’s really that simple. There are many products on the market, but suffice it to say, make sure to use one that is “selective”, which means that it will kill the weeds, not the grass. Also make sure it lists on the label that the product is safe for Zoysia.

To apply the product, read the label carefully and make sure to mix the right number of ounces of concentrate into the right amount of water. Then spray it on just enough to glisten the leaves. If it’s dripping or running off the leaves, you’ve gone too heavy and you are risking damage to the grass. Also be careful to use protective gloves and do not walk through the spray, lest you soak it up in your shoes. Minimizing exposure to chemicals is a big concern of mine, so if you are going to do this, I want you to do it right the first time.

My favorite sprayer is below. It builds up pressure as you push it around the lawn so you don’t need to pump by hand. If you don’t already have a sprayer, check this one out.
