Replacing Weeds with Grass

Hi C.J.,
We are putting in a new lawn. The previous lawn is all weeds. We plan on adding 3 inches of screened top soil. Do we have to kill or pull the weeds first to avoid these weeds from growing? Should we add anything else to our top soil to help our seed to grow?

-Susan

Hi Susan,

I would definitely advise killing off the weeds. There’s actually an organic product that is essentially a formulation of vinegar that would do the trick. It’s not great in established lawns, but for what you want to do, I think you’d be very happy AND it would be pesticide free with the same results. Anytime you can get the same results without resorting to chemicals, you’ve simply gotta do it.

Other than that, I’d say that you need to do a soil test just to see where the pH is (ideally between 6.0 - 6.5). If it’s lower than 6.0, you’ll want to mix in some pelletized limestone. Powdered would work well too, but it makes a cloud of dust that reminds some folks of Cheech & Chong opening a van door. Some folks, but not me of course.

Once you’ve seeded, make sure to water daily! Seed doesn’t grow when it is dry. It’s really that simple.

Let me know how it goes!
