Grass Help for a Fellow PSU Alum!

Hi C.J.,

We live in upstate South Carolina. I am also a graduate of Penn State (1968) in mathematics. I know little about yards but I think the people at some stores must know less.

We have tried many products but keep getting these weeds. We have even tried round up which just kills the grass and then the weeds return. We are looking for a product that will work but let the grass live. People say we have chickweed. I am sure what that looks like. Some of the stuff we have has very long runners that go in all directions and seem to have a purple tint to them with small clover shaped leaves. We also have a weed that looks like a tiny fern and stands about 2" high. We are not sure what to do. We have tried pulling them but that does not help. We have natural gardens with monkey grass, knockout roses and some shrubs as well as grass (fescue).

We would appreciate any suggestions that you might have.

Thanks,
Lynne

Hi Lynn,

Cool! A fellow Nittany Lion. Believe it or not I actually have some stickies in my freezer from Ye Olde College Diner right now! My kids are already hooked. For those of you in the dark on this particular topic, stickies are essentially little cinnamon sugar buns that have been pan fried in butter. Life really doesn’t get a whole lot better than that.

Keeping on top of weeds like chickweed takes persistence, and the task is never done. There absolutely ARE selective weed control products that will not harm the grass if done correctly, but the weeds will eventually make their way back in. For the most part, you just need to keep a diligent watch on things and keep spraying the patches as they pop up. I’ve included a clip I did 2 years ago as a guest on a home & garden show where I give some good pointers on exactly this issue. (I’m the guy on the right).

Let me know if this helps. GO BLUE!
