Heat Loving Grass in Indianapolis

Dear Lawn Coach:

For the past two Falls, I have planted grass to several bare areas in my lawn. The lawn looks great when the grass comes out in October and does well up to about June. When it gets hot, the new grass dies out. I assume the seed I planted is not heat tolerant. So, what grass do I need that will germinate relative fast and hold up in the hot, summer months. I live in the Indianapolis area, so we get all four seasons. Is there a particular brand of seed you would recommend or seed mixture.

Any tips on how to best grow new grass will be helpful. In the past, I put down top soil, add the seed, and water.

Thanks

Ned

Hi Ned,

If it is indeed due to the Summer heat, then you can’t go wrong with Tall Fescue. For the 4 season areas like Indianapolis, it’s about the best thing going for those tougher areas like yours.

The other issue to consider is the shade factor. Are those areas of the lawn really shady? I only ask because the timing of death seems to coincide nicely with the normal timing of shade thinning. If it is NOT shady, then definitely try Tall Fescue. If it IS really shady, then get some tree work done.

Other than that, it sounds as if you have been doing everything right. Let me know how it goes! Also, if you get the chance, Please say hi to Peyton for me. Tell him we’re happy with Eli so far, but he’d better win again this year OR ELSE!
